Two weeks before the fall of the Berlin Wall pressure by demonstrators was building up on the border at Checkpoint Charlie.
In this photo East German guards were trying to repair the fence dividing East and West Berlin after it was pulled apart by protesters. One of the protesters threw a beer can, bouncing off the cap of a guard.
